This is the first (of hopefully many) book contests at DeeeLovely. I have two Advance Reader Copies of Allison Burnett’s undiscovered gyrl to give away. You get to read it first because this book will not be on sale until August 11th. If you read my review, you know I really love this book and my wish is for these two copies to find their way to other readers to enjoy.
There are two ways to win and one winner will be selected from each category:
1) Comment at my Undiscovered Gyrl review page as to why this book sounds interesting to you and why you want to read this book. It’s that easy, but I get to choose the winner, so the most convincing/thoughtful response gets the book! Send a copy of your comment with your e-mail (so I can contact you if you win) through my contact page or leave your e-mail in your comment.
2) Recommend a book you’ve recently read and enjoyed and tell us why you loved it in a comment to this post. Winner 2 will be randomly selected from this group. Send a copy of your comment with your e-mail (so I can contact you if you win) through my contact page or leave your e-mail in your comment.
The fine print (in not so fine print): This contest is open to anyone in the continental US. Contest ends next Thurday, August 6th at 11:59pm EST, books will be mailed on Friday August 7th. The winner will be contacted by email and must respond by 2pm EST on Friday August 7th or a new winner will be chosen. You are welcome to enter both categories, but the same person cannot win both copies. Good Luck!
*** Congratulations to our winners Becca and Icedream! Thanks to everybody who entered, we had a lot of thoughtful replies and great book suggestions. Keep an eye out for more book giveaways at DeeeLovely. Icedream and Becca, enjoy your books and come back and let us know what you thought of it. ***

After the Fire by Belva Plain
I thought it was so absorbing because you were suspecting the wrong person as causing the fire. However at the end one got surprised at who actually was the criminal. It was heart-rending when her children were in the custody of her husband in another state.
I recently read Mary McGreevy by Walter Keady. It was our book group choice and not a book I would have chosen on my own. That’s why I love book groups, because it turned out I really enjoyed it!
Set in 1950’s Ireland, Mary McGreevy was a cloistered nun who decided to “jump the wall” to attend her father’s funeral. In itself not unusual, but then Sister Mary decides not to go back. Even worse, she decides to take over the farm and have a child, without bothering to get married. The town in shock. The town can do nothing but speculate and gossip about who may be the father of the child, almost every wife suspects her husband. The parish priests begins to suspect Sister Mary may be possessed by the devil.
What a fun book about small town gossip and the expectations of a woman’s place and what happens when one woman dares to defy all the rules.
Thanks for the chance.

I would recommend The Strain by Guillermo Del Toro, if you like vampires, or even medical thrillers, or just horror in general. The book sets a nice creepy tone, the vampires are all bad and there is gore but it isn’t going to give you nightmares. Some of the characters are slightly clichéd but more in a traditional send up to old vampire stories way than a lack of originality. And the ending is just enough of an ending that you are satisfied with it but still can’t wait to read the next one.

No need to enter me, Deee. I’m dropping in to say thanks for the notice about the contest. I’ve got it posted at Win a Book for you.

Loved, loved, loved “April and Oliver” by Tess Callahan. The characters were amazingly developed and there was such passion between them that at times I found my own heart aching. I devoured the book in 1 day, and that’s with 2 little kids in the house!
I also loved “Book of Negroes” by Lawrence Hill. The book of negroes actually exists and recorded the names of slaves who left the U.S. and moved to Canada. This novel was a fictional account of 1 slave girl and her journey from her small village in Africa to being enslaved and then moving on. In spite of so much adversity, she remained feisty and true to herself and her dreams.
